Arsenal legend Tony Adams was left \u2018deflated and disappointed\u2019 by Unai Emery\u2019s first game in charge.<\/p>\n

The Gunners lost 2-0<\/a> at home to Premier League champions Manchester City and, according to Adams, there were little signs of change under the new boss.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tEmery suffered defeat in his opening game\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

He told talkSPORT: \u201cIt was the same kind of performance. I was a little bit deflated and disappointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing from Arsene who always played open attacking football, I really wanted the new manager to come in there and tighten things up.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the last ten years now \u2013 [we\u2019ve been] leaking goals, soft away from home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted him to put his new goalkeeper in, work with his back four, have two screening central-midfield players, and keep a clean sheet. It was crying out for it. But I didn\u2019t see that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought he got a lot of selections wrong. His three best players were his subs [Alexandre Lacazette, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Lucas Torreira]. I don\u2019t know why he didn\u2019t start with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if his former side, for which he made a staggering 669 appearances, could challenge for the top four this season, Adams was pessimistic based on Sunday\u2019s showing.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tAdams enjoyed incredible success with Arsenal\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

He added: \u201cI can\u2019t see it. I don\u2019t know what he\u2019s been doing for the last six weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been rotating all of his players and giving them all a game. They\u2019ve got some good results but it\u2019s pre-season.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom minute one, I would\u2019ve picked my own goalkeeper, my back four and put the two lads in that I want to screen those, and get a firm base that\u2019s been missing for the last ten years.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve had six weeks of pre-season \u2013 go on, get on with it!<\/p>\n

\u201cArsenal fans up and down the country all want him to challenge for the title but at the moment we\u2019re nowhere near.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams believes the lack of defensive solidity at the club has had a serious impact on the output of star player Mesut Ozil<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cOzil has no players around him. We haven\u2019t got a captain. We haven\u2019t had a captain since Patrick [Vieira].<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t had a screening player since Gilberto Silva. They\u2019re all individuals, they\u2019re not working as a unit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to get some resilience back. Then you\u2019ve got a base for Ozil to go and do his stuff.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s one of the best players in the world and he\u2019s going through a difficult period.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he needs someone around him to say \u2018come on son, away we go, do your stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
